Lizzo sued by ex-dancers, lyrics in “Rumors” questioned

After news broke yesterday that Lizzo is facing a lawsuit for alleged sexual harassment and a hostile work environment, there has been a renewed interest in her 2021 hit song ‘Rumors‘.
NBC reported that Lizzo is being sued by three of her former dancers. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Ron Zambrano, stated that the way Lizzo and her management team treated their performers goes against everything Lizzo stands for publicly. It was revealed that Lizzo weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing. This stunning nature of mistreatment is a stark contrast to Lizzo’s public image as an advocate for self-love and body positivity.
Since news of the lawsuit emerged, Lizzo’s former creative director, Quinn Wilson, took to Instagram to share her own experiences and allegations of negative experiences while working with Lizzo. Wilson’s posts shed light on the issues within the industry and the importance of addressing them.
Which was echoed by another former dancer, Courtney Hollinquest, who worked with Lizzo from 2016–2021:
Amid online chatter, some individuals highlighted specific lyrics in Lizzo’s latest song ‘Rumors,’ particularly the lines that say, ‘Had to sever ties with certain individuals, yeah / Confidentiality agreement, no leaking information.’
The song continues, “Now them hoes tryna sue me / Bitch, I don’t give two shits.”
Now, it’s worth noting that the alleged incidents at the heart of the sexual harassment and hostile work environment lawsuits happened earlier in 2023, i.e. well after ‘Rumors‘ was released. At the time, Lizzo was sued for her use of samples in the 2016 song ‘Coconut Oil,’ which made headlines a few months before ‘Rumors‘ came out in 2021. She further settled a years-long lawsuit over ‘Truth Hurts‘ last year.
BuzzFeed has contacted representatives for Lizzo for comment.
