Last week, Tia shared her breastfeeding journey on Instagram, revealing that it wasn’t as effortless as people might think. She bravely opened up about battling an infection and how social media became her lifeline, connecting her with a supportive community.

Tia went into detail about how different breastfeeding was for her with her first child versus her second. She shares her two children — 12-year-old Cree and 5-year-old Cairo — with her ex-husband Cory Hardrict.

When I had Cree, I was struggling to breastfeed him. I was only able to breastfeed for 3 months before having to switch to formula.
During my second pregnancy, Instagram was around, and it was actually through here where I learned a lot more about breastfeeding, and also where I met a huge community of women who were all so supportive and encouraged me to continue on.

With that additional help, Tia revealed she was able to breastfeed her daughter Cairo for 13 months. Although she was able to do it for an extended period of time, the process itself was still “difficult.”

I was pumping every 3 hours at work while working 14-hour days on set, and at times I would have to breastfeed on set as well. And after those long days, I would return home to breastfeed Cairo.

Whenever I was traveling for work, I would pump extra milk so that she would have milk when I was away. My body was extremely fatigued and overworked.

Things got so bad, Tia recalled developing mastitis — a ‘painful’ infection of the breast tissue that left her hospitalized.

But even through the long days, and the hospitalization, I still didn’t give up. I continued to breastfeed through the pain, and pushed through.
But Tia wanted to emphasize that breastfeeding isn’t the only way to keep your child nourished. Speaking from firsthand experience about her challenges, she wanted to make mothers and future moms-to-be know that formula is still a fine alternative.

And if you are struggling with breastfeeding, I want you to know that it is more than okay to feed your children formula. As long as your children are fed, loved, happy, and supported, that’s all that matters.
